Description:
Large and large-billed, stout rosefinch. Male's crown and mantle are paler and greyer, with pinkish wash, and streaking on upperparts is less prominent. Pink of supercilium barely extends across forehead. Female is heavily streaked has pale grey coloration to upperparts and whitish underparts.
Distribution:
Common resident and altitudinal migrant in all the regions of Gilgit-Baltistan. In summers up to 3800m in high-altitude juniper, briar and scrub; winters down to 2000m in bushes, thorny scrub, cultivations and gardens.
Behavior:
Usually secretive; forages in berry-bearing bushes, junipers and low vegetation, and on ground. Generally in pairs; in winter alone or in small parties. Feeds on mainly seeds, buds and berries of bushes and trees, including wild rose, wild olive, honeysuckle, juniper, sea-buckthorn and barberry; also takes seeds of dandelion.
